Our Houston Expansion – Opening in 2024!

Portal is opening up new lab space in Houston, projected for mid-2024. Our Texas expansion is exciting, because we’re partnering with the Texas Medical Center and taking up space in their new $1.8 billion Helix Park Development. Houston is a true emerging market for life sciences that is rapidly growing. The state has more than 4,800 life sciences startups, along with world-class research universities including Rice University, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor University, the University of Houston, among others. Portal’s Houston expansion aims to be the catalyst for making the city a hub for life sciences in the state.

The Portal Houston space will be located in the TMC Helix Development, located in the Southwest part of the city. Our footprint will be 30,000 SF of world-class lab space to help biotech and medtech startups run therapeutic and diagnostic experiments.

Portal’s Helix Park location will serve as a destination for startups emerging from local universities. As these companies scale they will also serve as a resource for local talent retention.
The Portal offices and world-class lab space will be over 30,000 SF and is scheduled to open in early 2024. The space will have state-of-the-art lab space and shared equipment, benches, desks, offices, large co-working spaces, and multiple conference rooms. The Portal lab will have over $2 million of modern equipment and will include both wet and dry labs, tissue culture hoods, BSL2 labs, chemical fume hoods, among others.

Why Houston?

Texas is one of the fastest-growing states in the U.S., and soon, Houston will be the third-largest city. The city’s economy has moved well beyond natural resources as their stronghold – healthcare is one of the largest sectors in the area. Between MD Anderson and the Texas Medical Center, we view it as area ripe for innovation. Like our Boston expansion, we’re excited to partner with Beacon Capital to help grow the life sciences ecosystem in the city. Texas has nearly everything a life sciences startup needs – access to funding, research universities, and a business-friendly environment – however, until now, these verticals were siloed. By moving into Houston, Portal will help build a life sciences ecosystem from the ground-up with the help of TMC.
